Changing street to one-way has Lewiston school relieved

By Melanie Price

LEWISTON -- Parents and teachers are giving sighs of relief because of a new traffic safety measure implemented April 12 next to the elementary school.

Greg Thomas, principal of Lewiston Elementary, said changing 200 South into a one-way street keeps the students out of traffic.

"We were just worried about all those kids," Thomas said. "The parents would park on the opposite side of the street and the kids would have to cross traffic in order to get to the car."

Thomas said he was trying to find the most effective option "with the least amount of impact."

Getting the street changed to one-way required the approval of the City Council. Cache County Sheriff's Office came and helped redirect traffic while the changes on the road were made.

"On bus duty the teachers love it," he said. "They're not as worried."

However, Thomas said it took the teachers a little while to get used to the road because now they have to take 100 East to get to the school.

The road was only approved on a temporary basis, so keeping it one-way will be re-evaluated at the end of the school year, he said.

Thomas said the road helps things go smoothly and that he "hopes they keep it for the safety of the kids."
