Church land for sale, and River Heights covets it By
Matt Stephens RIVER HEIGHTS -- They would like to enter into the real estate business, but the members of the City Council are not sure whether the city has the financial ability to do so. Public works director Kent Parker told the council about a piece of land that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints owns. The property is approximately 4.14 acres, and River Heights wants it. Parker said the property is roughly $35,260 per acre, or $145,976 for all the land. Councilwoman Mary Yancy said the land could be used for a park. Mayor Vic Jensen said he is "seriously considering buying that property," however he is not sure whether they have the money to do it. He suggested looking into a grant or even getting a loan from a bank, considering that the city has a high line of credit. "We'd come out smelling like roses," said Jensen. "We can't go wrong." Councilwoman Debbie Rees said, "I'll be happy to investigate grants, if we can't pay for it we can always sell it." All the council members agreed they would like to purchase the property for a park, except Noel Cooley, who was not present. In addition to the news about the possible purchase of park land, Parker also said that the new reservoir has been filled twice. He said the nearly 1 million-gallon reservoir takes two days to fill, and appears to have a leak. The reservoir is losing one half-inch per day. Parker is not sure whether the loss is coming from a leak in the structure or a loose valve.
