Paradise draws line for possible future annexations

By Ginger Kelly

PARADISE -- Planning and Zoning drew a tentative "declaration of annexation" line at its Tuesday night meeting.

A declaration of annexation means if someone moves onto land within the line, the Town Council will entertain the motion to annex their land, said Chairman Jon White.

The line currently follows the Highline Canal to 6600 South and will follow the contour on the west side of the valley and then back to 10065 South, on the south side of town boundary.

Gene Forsberg, committee member, said once the line is drawn, it is not set in stone. There is still room for discussion and change.

Once the line was drawn, Forsberg wanted to know where the committee should go from there.

The committee talked about what the town would want to have built on the land, such as what income-level homes should be built, and the possibility of commercial property.

"We should encourage some commercial base," said Forsberg.

"Some industry doesn't hurt," said White, who would also like to keep as much green space as possible.

An annexation law update is required by all counties, except Salt Lake, by House Bill 155 Annexation Amendments. A booklet containing what Utah cities and towns must do for the annexation update was distributed by the Utah League of Cities and Towns, and specified Dec. 31, 2002 as the final date for all declaration of annexations to be completed and approved.
