Hyde Park council examining options for new park By
Sarah Mulholland HYDE PARK -- The City Council proposed a layout of what it would like the new Lions Park to look like. The attendants of the meeting sounded as if they were in favor of it, but the council is going to consider a few more things before adoption. Hyde Park is in need of more recreation fields and would like to use land that the city already owns. The council would like to re-create the existing park to accommodate more people. "We are expanding the use of our park to more of the citizens," Mayor David Kooyman said. Charles Wheeler went over the proposed plan. He said that they would include two small parking lots, holding 35 vehicles. He would also like vehicles to be able to park on the side of the road next to the park, requiring the road to be widened. He also proposed a swinging gate for one of the parking lots, hoping to reduce destruction in the area. The new park would have a small soccer field for the U-10 group, and a Little League T-ball field. There would be a new playground, pavilion, and new restrooms. This will take "over a course of several years," Wheeler said. The cost would be an estimate of $90,000 to $100,000. This would not require a tax increase. They have a small amount of funding right now, but would seek a grant from the Bureau of Outdoor Recreation. "What we are trying to do is to improve what we've got, and take it one step at a time," Reed Elder said. One thing the council needs to consider is how to take care of the springs and water supply in the park. In other business, the council is still thinking about the new alcohol ordinance. The Temporary Occupancy Policy has been adopted.
