Victory warms USU softball team on cold day By
Jessica Johnson The Aggies were in top form when they defeated the California State Northridge Matadors 3-2, in the second game of a three-game series Sunday at LaRee and LeGrand Johnson Field. The spectators didn't seem to mind the conditions, with a wintry wind blowing over the field. They were all bundled up like it was the Olympics again. Some fans even used a propane heater to keep warm. The dugout was never without the constant banter of cheers. Each player had her own cheer centered-around her name or number. Chants of "niner-niner-liner, g-double-o-d e-y-e good eye, good eye, good eye," and "H-H-H-two-O could be heard all over the field." Regardless of the noise the pitchers of both teams were able to hold the game scoreless until the fifth inning when Northridge's Christy Menefee was batted in by designated-player Summer Richardson, and held on to the lead until the sixth inning. In the sixth inning, lead-off batter, right fielder Marnie Andrews was able to reach first on a hit to center field and advanced when sacrifice bunter Marcie Neff was called out at first. Kelly Loas hit a single to left field and put runners on first and third with one out. Andrews was batted in by Stephanie Vasarhely. Leos was thrown out at third putting Vasarhely on second. The Aggies were able to take the lead, 2-1, when shortstop Heather Curtis scored Vasarhely. Curtis was left on third when Breann Smith struck out. The score was tied up in the seventh, with a homer by Northridge lead off batter number 15 Summer Richardson that went over the right-center field fence. With the game tied, the Aggies were able to win in the ninth when catcher Breanne Smith got a hold of a pitch and sent it over the center field fence for her fourth homer. The team gathered her at the plate for a round of hugs and high-fives. The win was the second for pitcher Lindsay Janssen.
