Boise State beats USU lacrosse team in whiteout conditions

By Clark Jessop

Snow was falling so hard in Saturday's men's lacrosse game that referees were forced to change from the normal white ball, to a bright orange one.

Utah State lost the game to Boise State, 10-5.

Light snow fell as the game began, but when the final horn sounded, it was a blizzard.

"In conditions like that, it's a totally different game," Utah State middie Derald Miller said. "To win the game it's not as much skill as it is heart and hustle."

"It makes for a good time, a lot of fun," middie Brad Hickenlooper said. Boise State entered the game undefeated in Division II play. The team played a physical game and never trailed.

Tyler Berkey, Thad Nicholls and Derald Miller each scored to tie the game at 3-3 after falling to an early 3-0 deficit. The rest of the first half belonged to the Broncos as they outplayed the Aggies to gain a 5-3 lead going into the half.

Brock Miller and Thad Nicholls both scored in the third quarter, but the Broncos kept their two goal lead making the score 7-5 at the end of the third quarter.

The fourth quarter began with a discussion between the coaches and referees about whether the game should be canceled, but they played on. The fourth quarter was all Boise State. It scored three more goals.

Next, the Aggies will seek to avenge their loss in the Division II tournament. Boise State is the heavy favorite going in.

Despite losing both games they played against the Broncos this spring, the Aggies remain optimistic going into this weekend's tournament. To beat the Broncos, the Aggies will need to play better, smarter offense.

"We can't force things, we didn't take the ball inside as much as we need to," Miller said. "But I'm looking forward to next week, I know we can beat these guys."

The division II tournament will be in Orem.
