Bobcats put forth the effort, but it is not reflected in the score By
Julie Ann Grosshans The reward? A 4-1 victory at Cedar Ridge Middle School. "For the first time all season we put 80 minutes worth of heart together," Lakers' Head Coach Bill Fletcher said. "They grew up a lot [Friday] because we were so young." Even though the Bobcats dropped the game, they were still upbeat afterward. Sky View Head Coach Doyle Geddes said his team played a great game because they hustled, played together as a team, moved the ball around and had great looks at the net. "What I want our guys to remember is the effort out there," Geddes said. "The score doesn't reflect the effort." The Lakers scored their first goal on a free kick down the middle by Ken Hickman at the 27th minute. Although this gave Bonneville more momentum than they started the game with, the Lakers were unable to capitalize on any opportunities. BHS held a 1-0 lead at halftime. After numerous goal attempts, it seemed as if nothing would fall past the Lakers' goalie Jake Tobin. One of the Bobcat's closest attempts came on an attempt by SV's Ken Carlson but was blocked out by Bonneville's Dennin Loomis while Tobin was at the top of his box. From then on, Sky View came out with a sense of urgency. It seemed to back fire in their face though, as Sky View slipped up and gave BHS a fluke goal and a 2-0 advantage. Tobin threw the ball toward the Sky View goal, past any Laker attacking forwards. Bobcat sweeper Grew Hawkes headed the ball toward goalkeeper James Clark. Unfortunately for SV, the ball went over Clark's head and into the goal. "I guess it was sort of a Christmas present," Fletcher said. BHS's Scott Lewis extended the Laker lead to 3-0 off an open shot at the 57-minute mark. The Bobcats would finally get their change a minute later as the ball rolled past Tobin on a kick by Chris Skinner off a pass from Ken Carlson. Skinner said the team felt good about the game but it was difficult to take because they were unable to finish. "[Tobin] did a good job of cleaning stuff up," Geddes said. "I look back at some of the looks--man we had some great opportunities. If we put a couple of those in it would have been a different game." If only. The one Sky View goal was not enough as Bonneville scored again off a penalty kick by Jeff DuFour.
