Millville council approves money for First Responders By
Meghan Dinger MILLVILLE -- The City Council voted to fund the Millville-Nibley First Responders for next year at Thursday's meeting. Guy Curtis, a member of the First Responders, gave a presentation to the council on the current status and future needs of the group, which responds to emergencies in Millville and Nibley. "Over the past five years the calls have dramatically increased," Curtis said of the 54 emergency calls that were received in 2001. Currently, there are 10 responders, with seven residing in Millville and three located in Nibley, Curtis said. This makes the response time to Millville better than to Nibley, so more participation would be beneficial, he said. "We're always looking for additional sign-ups to better our response times," Curtis said. "We want 24-hour coverage. We're always looking for people to give their time." Although the number of First Responders is sufficient for the area, there is a need for newer, upgraded, easier-to-use lifesaving equipment. Curtis said the "bottom line" is that the First Responders group needs $3,500 in order to purchase an automatic external defibrillator machine, which the Nibley City Council has already approved at their last meeting. Praise for the efforts of the First Responders came from Mayor Gale Hall, Councilwoman Jamie Skeen, and Councilman Larry Lewis. "We appreciate the First Responders and all you guys do," Hall said. "You are doing a great job." In other business, the council approved home occupation licenses for Travis Hobbs for E&H Lawn care and Snow Removal at 414 S. 500 East, as well as for Jason Dattage for B&D Landscape Maintenance at 25 W. 300 North. The council also approved a business license for Shane Johnson for Aardvark Construction on 160 E. 200 North.
