Baseball club beats Boise State, 11-3

By Jessica Johnson

The crowd was subdued as Utah State University's baseball team picked up its first win in a three game series against their Western Mountain Conference rival, Boise State University Friday night.

With about 30 spectators in the bleachers at Max L. Johnson Memorial field in Providence, the crowd never reached above a dull roar. Despite the lack of spectators, the Aggies were able to defeat the Broncos, 11-3. This game was the second home series for the Aggies.

"It's nice to come out and win at home"' said head coach Ernie Banks.

This win brings the Aggies closer to the conference tournament, with an 8-4 record in conference play.

Playing a key role was pitcher Taylor Jensen. With an E.R.A of about 2.5, Jensen is their most consistent pitcher.

"Jensen's pitching is pretty solid," Banks said.

Pitching wasn't the only thing to put the Aggies ahead. The hitting was outstanding. The Aggies led off the first inning with two runs, followed by six runs in the second inning.

When No. 9 hitter Scott Ramage, nicknamed Asinine, stepped up to bat, a spectator yelled "We're all here for ya." Ramage smiled slyly at the crowd and with a full count, hit a line drive toward the Cache Valley Bank sign.

The Aggies held the Broncos scoreless till the top of the fourth inning, when the Broncos were able to score two runs.

Bronco pitcher Steve Gowans struggled early on in the second inning. After hitting two Aggies, allowing six runs, and having three conferences at the mound, Gowans was replaced by Rocky Hansen. Hansen didn't allow a run till the sixth inning.

"He came out and did his job," said Boise coach Kip Davis. "He really threw well for us."

The Bronco offense came to life in the fourth inning with a home run by Jake Strong, and a run scored by Dusty Hovrud. The streak didn't last long. They were held scoreless until the last inning when Mike Strong hit a triple to centerfield.

The Broncos weren't the only team to have a home run. In the sixth inning with runners on first and third, Will Wheeler hit it over the centerfield fence, allowing Jason Clark and designated hitter Brett Thompson to score.
