JCOM department names Bullock, Sweeney, Pease as professors of the year
Assistant Professor Cathy Ferrand Bullock, who joined the USU faculty last Fall, was named the JCOM Teacher of the Year. Assistant Professor Michael S. Sweeney received the annual Faculty Service Award. And Professor Ted Pease, department head, received the annual Researcher of the Year Award. The recognitions come on the basis of nominations and voting by department faculty. Bullock, who completed her dissertation at the University of Washington last summer and joined the faculty in August, was honored for her classroom efforts. In their nominations, her colleagues noted that Bullock teaches both freshmen in the department's largest introductory class, and master's students in the graduate program. Sweeney, a past recipient of both the department teaching and research awards, was College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences Researcher of the Year for 2001. His colleagues selected him for the 2002 service award in recognition of Sweeney's contributions as coordinator of the department's graduate program and adviser to the students who put together the department's award-winning news website, The Hard News Cafe, which was named the best in the region by the Society of Professional Journalists last week. Pease, a nationally recognized authority on issues of race and ethnicity in the news business, has just concluded a three-year research study funded by the Poynter Institute for Media Studies, "The News and Race Models of Excellence Project."
