Is ice dancing really a sport? By
Liz Bellessa Ice Dancing is a major event in the Winter Olympics, but how does Ice Dancing spark the interest of many while there are other events to watch, and other more exciting things to do besides watching Ice Dancing. The Winter Olympics have come and gone, but they have made their mark while in Salt Lake City. Only a few of the many Olympic games have been etched into my mind, one of them includes Ice Dancing and the women's Bobsled Team. The women's Bobsled Team because it had the first African-American women to win the Gold medal for an event in the Winter Olympics. Ice Dancing is a major competition in the Olympics, but is Ice Dancing really a true sport? A sport in my definition when it comes down to it either has a ball, a score board, or a referee. Basketball, Baseball, Footballl, and Soccer are all great American Sports that anyone can sit down and watch when the sport is in season. Not many are excited about sitting down to watch Ice Dancing because where will the tournaments and competitions be broadcasted when they leave the public eye. Every now and then people are in awe of the dancers because they are athletic, but many people all over the world are athletic in their own way. For those of you who are out there, granted you may not be famous, but you are still athletic. Whose to say I couldn't be on a full ride scholarship playing for University of Connecticut women's basketball team. I was a basketball player all throughout high school, and considered to be most athletic in the school. I need action to spark my interest like turnovers, steels, interceptions, 3 pt. shots, and dirty moves to get my attention. Not dancing on ice, consisting of the same moves over and over again every minute. This is how I envision the Olympics when they are over because it is exactly what Monster.com says on their commercial for jobs. Take away the cameras, the crowds, the medals, the television, and what do you have? A really fit guy! That is all for Ice Dancing, not one of the athletic people make these kind of endorsements year round. All they try for in life is to win a Gold in the Olympics. The only thing that these people have going for them is being athletic, and having a huge dream about going to the Olympics one day.
