Hyrum council split over fee for Saturay burials By
Shanna Nielsen HYRUM -- City Council members found themselves at odds Thursday over whether a fee should be established for Saturday burials at the Hyrum Cemetery. The audience members observing the council meeting readjusted in their seats as an otherwise quiet evening took a turn with a controversial topic. "Presently, we don't charge extra for Saturday burials," Mayor Olson said, "even though we sometimes have to pay staff overtime. "We charge $125 no matter what when we ought to charge something extra for Saturday." The topic became emotional when several council members disagreed with the proposal to raise the fee. "I hate to raise it, that's a hard time for people," Dixie L. Clawson said. Micheal Stauffer said, "In this particular instance, I oppose. I am philosophically opposed to it. There is so much grief surrounding the death of a loved one already." The fact the cemeteries don't generate revenue, yet they require a lot of attention to maintain, makes this issue not only a moral one but one that concerns the budget of Hyrum City. "We have an obligation to the citizens to make sure cemetery is kept up," Bruce O. James said. Finally, the council voted to table the issue and discuss it when it can discuss the budget in more detail. Also discussed at the meeting was a request for a special exception to allow a double-fronted lot to be divided into two building lots at 624 East 300 South. "I would recommend that if we allow this, we'll allow the lot to be broken off for whoever has the property, not a particular party," zoning administrator Thomas LaBau said. The motion was carried by the council.
