North Logan makes fourth revision to the 2001 budget

By Holli Gunnell

Five North Logan residents appeared at a public hearing regarding a fourth revision by the City Council to the 2001 budget at Thursday night's meeting to voice concerns about money for the library.

"We need more money for the upkeep of computers," said Maureen Sorensen, a North Logan Librarian. "We can't function without money."

The third revision, which became effective in December 2000, allotted $170,408 total for the library for the upcoming year. Although the council approved an additional $1,400 to go towards "miscellaneous revenue", which includes copy machines and other equipment, library employees said they feel it is just not enough.

Library Director Sue Randleman said that she warned the board and other decision makers when plans were originally made to put 26 computers in the library.

"Twenty six computers is a lot to take care of," she said. "We are going to end up with a lot of computers that have "out of order" signs on them."

Randleman also said that because the computers have problems so often, it is necessary to take the computers designated as "Kid's Computers", which have educational games, into the "adult section" to replace broken down ones. "It is really a juggling act," she said.

In response to the problem, City Administrator and Recorder Jeff Jorgensen proposed taking $1, 000 from the Travel and Training fund, which he said would probably not use the money this year, and give it to the library. The council agreed to the proposal.

In addition to this decision, Council Member Elaine Nelson proposed that next year it would be useful to hire interns from Utah State University to take care of the computers.

"The library would benefit from internships from USU's info tech students," she said. "You can hire them for seven or eight dollars and hour and have the computers continually upkept."

The council agreed to look into using interns when planning next year's budget.
