Letter carriers to collect food in Smithfield

By Casey Hobson

SMITHFIELD -- Smithfield is going postal.

In cooperation with the Smithfield post office, Smithfield is declaring May 13 as "Letter Carriers' Food Drive Day."

Mayor Kent Ward said the date was selected in part because of Smithfield Health Days, May 11-13, but mostly because it is the day that worked best for the post office.

The post office "just put together a day they do a food drive and collect food donated," Ward said. "They just pick a day that's good for them."

Last year, the post office collected an estimated 2,000 pounds of food, and Ward said he expects similar results this year.

"I think it's a great deal that they're doing it and are willing to take the time to gather [food]," he said.

The food collected will be sent to Logan and distributed throughout Cache County.

Ward said the post office is looking primarily for canned foods with the labels still attached. As Smithfield mail carriers deliver the mail on May 13, they will collect any donated food left on doorsteps.
