Providence council agrees to explore annexation/development of 40 acres By

PROVIDENCE -- The City Council approved a resolution to further discuss the annexation of land with the help of several concerned residents. The land in question, sandwiched between 100 West and 200 East streets along Canyon Road, is being petitioned for annexation by owner Scott Theurer, a Providence resident representing his own land in addition to land belonging to the Zollinger and Lisonbee families. After the annexation, Theurer plans to develop the land, which totals around 40 acres -- a decision neighbor Sue Fuhriman is not pleased with. "Why would the city of Providence want more urban development?" asked Fuhriman. "Why would the existing citizens of Providence want to pay for this?" Fuhriman appealed to the council, the "custodians of the community," asking members to consider the strain of up to 40 new families on Providence's roads, waste disposal system and schools as well as the preservation of open spaces. "It is a terminal commitment that precludes agriculture when this country is cyring out for agricultural preservation," she said. Theurer asked that the City Council give his petition fair consideration. "I would appreciate it that it could be discussed," he said. Councilman Jay Hicken pointed out the responsibility of the council to consider the petition. "When we can provide the services; we really don't have the right to turn them down," he said. Fuhriman suggested other options, including development with larger lot sizes, equestrian development, or creating a wildlife or recreational preservation on the land. "I'm not against development," she said. "But right now, it is in my back yard." Councilman Randy Simmons agreed. "Recognizing development is going to come, but there are ways to make it less intrusive," he said.
