Tremonton council seeks advice on demolition derbies By

TREMONTON -- With mud flying and tires squealing, the Tremonton City Council debated over allowing truck/car demolition derbies to perform on city grounds at Tuesday's meeting. And with a red flag, they agreed to race the issue to the Planning and Zoning Commission for its ideas and recommendations. The City Council talked about making an ordinance to either totally not allow car racing and anything similar in city limits, or allow it. Council member Blaine Mauchley voiced his concerns over children and teen-agers being hurt in racing small dragsters. "I'm just worried about young kids getting hurt," said Mauchley. He then spoke of the menthol that fuels the small dragsters and how easily this almost-alcohol burns. "That doesn't give me a warm filling inside," he said. "It might if you get hit by one of those," joked council member Shirley Scoffield. The council juggled the idea of just allowing conditional permits to those traveling racing companies as the Western States Racing Association. The movement was made to table the issue until the Planning and Zoning Commission could read over the issue and advise the City Council.
