Logan, Brigham City can't house all Cache County inmates; excess now shipped to Davis County
The crowded Cache County Jail today began sending inmates to be housed in Davis County, Cache Sheriff Lynn Nelson announced. Cache County has sent its overflow of inmates to Box Elder County since the jail in Brigham City opened two years ago. But that jail, with a capacity of about 140, is now also full. "Our inmate housing situation is at a crisis level," Nelson said. "We are facing ever increasing numbers of inmates committed to our jail. Our efforts to solve this problem and develop plans to deal with it have hit a brick wall at every turn." Besides the Box Elder Jail, the closest facility is the Davis County Jail in Farmington, where Cache sheriff's Lt. Von Williamson was scheduled to transport two Cache County inmates Wednesday afternoon. Weber County is operating under a federal consent decree that has imposed a cap on inmate populations. Weber County is finishing construction of an 888-bed jail, but it will not be ready for occupancy until May or June. Davis County has a limited number of beds it can rent Cache County. The Cache County Jail has a capacity of 77 inmates. In 1999, the average daily inmate population was 80.92 inmates per day. For the first quarter of 2000, that number stood at 89.61 inmates per day. Between 18 and 19 of them were housed in the Box Elder County Jail. Today, 23 of Cache's inmates are in Box Elder Jail. The Cache County Council budgeted $235,425 to house inmates in Box Elder County for the 2000 budget year. If use of the Box Elder County space continues at the current rate, that money will run out sometime during the last part of October.
