Lewiston instructors to teach CPR class Saturday By

LEWISTON -- The Lewiston First Response Unit is holding a CPR certification class on April 15 at the Lewiston fire station. The class will begin at 9 a.m. and lasts six hours. The class will cost $15 for certification, and $10 for recertification. According to John Hayes, certified CPR instructor, the class will teach people how to do CPR, rescue breathing, pumping the heart and first aid. Hayes will also talk about the signs and symptoms of someone having a heart attack as well as giving instructions on the Heimlich maneuver. Working with mannequins is part of the instruction, and some physical activity is also required. In addition to John Hayes, Mike Lott will also help instruct the course. This is the second class offered by the Lewiston First Response Unit which encompasses Lewiston, Cornish, and Cove, but this class will continue to be offered at least twice a year so they can maintain their certification in instructing CPR. "One thing we're taught is our safety comes first," said Hayes, referring to Lewiston's excellent record. Hayes said that in the two years he has been involved in the unit there have been no accidents. When responding to an accident it's important to keep your eyes open because there can be all sorts of hazards, said Hayes. The class is open to anyone who would like to participate. Preregistration can be arranged by contacting Mike Lott, John Hayes, or Rod Hammer. Registration will also be accepted at the class.
