Students at Utah State University last week won eight awards for excellence in journalism at the annual regional convention of the Society for Professional Journalists.

Senior Nicole McLean, who also has been chosen by faculty as the department's top graduating senior, won three second-place awards for her work for A-TV, the cable system that serves the USU campus.

Also winning were Wade Denniston, who writes for the Hard News Cafe but won for a sports column in the Statesman, the campus student newspaper; Heather Fredrickson; Melanie Salisbury; A-TV News; and the Hard News Cafe.

Attending the Region 9 conference March 31 through April 1 in Denver were broadcasting professor Penny Byrne and students Grayson Wilcox, Heath Worley, BethAnne Heaps and Tania Dean. The conference featured a session on the "e-lection," on the role that the internet might play in the November federal elections.
