After a month off, USU golfers look to get back on course

By Wade Denniston
After nearly a month off, the Utah State golf team will be back in the action Friday and Saturday at the Cougar Classic in Provo.

The Aggies, who are looking to rebound from a 19th-place finish at the Spalding Anteater Invitational in Coto de Caza, Calif., March 29-30, should be able to turn it around this weekend at the Riverside Country Club.

"Five out of the six guys have played the course more than five times," said junior Casey Beck. "It's going to be like a home tournament for us."

Senior Chris Moody knows the course better than any other Aggie player as he hails from Provo.

"Expect (Moody) to do well," Aggie head coach Dan Roskelley said.

But if the Aggies as a team want to finish well, they'll need to be more focused and patient than the last time out, according to Beck. They will also need more consistency from each teammate, Moody said.

"We've got three, good, solid players," said Moody, who has an individual goal to finish in the top-10 in the next two tournaments, "then it depends on the fourth and fifth players."

The Cougar Classic features a different format than past tournaments the Aggies have played in.

Instead of only five players competing, six will contend, with the top four scores counting in each 18-hole round.

Making this trip for the Aggies are Moody, Beck, Mitch Harris, Mike Haws, Kevin lifestyles and Kevin Mullen, who is competing in his last tournament before serving an LDS church mission to Poland.

Riverside will prove to be a challenging course for the Aggies, but still should compete well with their experience.

"It's a tougher course," Moody said. "The greens are known to be hard and fast."

Added Beck: "It's a fun course. It's always in good condition."

Other teams competing in the two-day Classic are: Air Force, tournament host BYU, Colorado State, Dixie Junior College, Fresno State, Hawaii, New Mexico, San Diego State, San Jose State, Southern Utah University, Utah, UTEP, UVSC, Weber State and Wyoming.
