Cemetery for North Logan debated

NORTH LOGAN -- Although it was April Fool's Day, there were no tricks or pranks
at the City Council meeting when members discussed building a cemetery.
Land on 2300 North and 1600 East is being considered for a cemetery but little has
been done because of the desire council members have for another city to go in with them.
"The only way I would look at a cemetery lot is if it involves other cities," said Council
Member Wayne Watkins.
Because of the expense of cemeteries, the city has asked Hyde Park and Logan to go in
with them.
"Hyde Park's cemetery is full, but they have already purchased other land," said
Council Member Lynette Cartwright. "Logan's is filling up fast, but they are looking at other
land also."
"All cemeteries around us are around 100 years old, it would be great for North Logan
to respond to this," said Mayor Jack Draxler.
Cartwright said, "If we are going to have a cemetery it will have to be solely us."
The total land would cover 53 acres with 20 to 40 acres for the cemetery and the rest
for parks and recreation, she said.
"I am encouraged," said Council Member Gordon Younker, "I think the public will be
too."
Cartwright said the Council plans on having details finished by November's election
time for the citizens to vote on bonds and whether or not to put the cemetery in. A public hearing
will be sceduled in June or July for citizens to voice their opinions.
In other business, Assistant Fire Chief Jon Keller released the fire department's annual
report for the cities of North Logan and Hyde Park. Total incidents in North Logan for 1998 were
2,007 and for Hyde Park, 696. This has increased from the 1995 totals of 1385 for North Logan
and 444 for Hyde Park.
"With the growth in these cities, the calls have increased," Keller said. Accidents in
North Logan climbed from 168 in 1995 to 281 in 1998. Hyde Park's accidents also increased
from 32 in 1995 to 57 in 1998.
"Many accidents in North Logan are from workers going home; many of Hyde Park's
are failures to yield," Keller said.
Keller also reported juvenile arrests are up slightly.
