On permanence:

"My work is being destroyed almost as soon as it is printed. One day it is being read; the next day someone's wrapping fish in it."

Play by Utah State Emeritus Prof opens in New York

By Amanda Marinello

November 29, 2004 | LOGAN – “Yielding,” a play by Utah State University emeritus professor of English Gene Washington, will be performed in New York City at the Creative Place Theatre Nov. 30 - Dec. 2.

Only 10 minutes in length, but divided into seven different acts, “Yielding” focuses on the relationship between a newlywed couple as they are stranded on a chairlift descending from their mountaintop wedding. “Stalled and alone from early evening to midnight, the couple discovers how much yielding is required in marriage,” said Washington.

Each act represents a transition in the couple’s relationship, allowing the audience to view the progress as the new bride and groom learn to submit to each other. “The audience empathizes with the couple as they discover that any obstacle can be overcome and the relationship maintained, if both people are willing to yield to each other,” he said.

The play takes its structure from a speech in Shakespeare’s As You Like It and was originally performed in Utah State’s Black Box Theater in January 2001. It was also performed in Salt Lake City in June 2002 by the Wasatch Acting Company.
