By Patrick Williams

November 10, 2004 | LOGAN — Indian artist Prasanna is featured in concert during International Education Week (IE week) at Utah State University. His appearance has been arranged by Shyam Kumar, cultural secretary of the Indian Students Association at Utah State.

Prasanna is featured in “Rendezvous with Prasanna” Monday, Nov. 15, at 7 p.m. in the Eccles Conference Center Auditorium. Tickets are available at the Ticket Office in the Smith Spectrum and at the door. The concert is free for Utah State students with current ID and $10 for general admission seating.

The concert features the best of Indian classical music from the southern region performed on electric guitar. The event is supported by the Utah State department of music, the office of International Students and Scholars, Kinko’s, KSM Music, the department of biology and others.

“Prasanna is the only musician who performs the classical music of India on electric guitar at the highest professional level,” Kumar said. “He is also a top performer of jazz, rock, blues and other Western music styles.”

During his time at Utah State Prasanna will be featured in concert and conduct an interactive workshop with students. Accompanying him during the concert is Lakshman, who plays the traditional drum, mridangam. He will present a workshop on traditional Indian drums. For workshop information contact Navin at (435) 881-2106 or via email at twarak@cc.usu.edu.

At Utah State Kumar has experience providing cultural opportunities to the community. During last year’s IE week he conducted an Indian classical music workshop.

“I feel that the university and Cache Valley communities should get an opportunity to have the best of Indian music,” Kumar said. “During IE Week, the office of International Students and Scholars and the International Student Council try to showcase the art, culture and heritage of different parts of the world. This year I suggested that Prasanna appear on campus.”

Prasanna is a magna cum laude graduate in Western classical composition and jazz improvisation from the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston, Mass. He was awarded the Berklee College of Music Composition Achievement Award for outstanding work as a classical composer and the Berklee College of Music Guitar Achievement Award for outstanding work as a jazz guitarist.

The guitarist has appeared around the world, including performances in Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, the Cultureel Centrum in Belgium and the India International Center in New Delhi.

Critic Chris Jisi, writing in Bass Player magazine (June 2004) summarizes Prasanna’s performance. “Indian guitarist Prasanna stirs a pot of intoxicating, heady world fusion,” he said.
